Our Curriculum
Anything’s Possible
Our curriculum is designed specifically for our children – giving them what they need to strive and achieve their best. At Houldsworth, we have considered what should drive our curriculum, drawing upon what our children need most in order to become educated citizens.
Our curriculum aims to support children who attend our school by:
- Increase the exposure the children have towards high level VOCABULARY and give opportunities to practise using these words to improve oracy.
- A curriculum that improves KNOWLEDGE of the world, building upon what the children know to create new links.
- Improve the RELATIONSHIPS that the children have with each other, building skills and abilities to work together.
Underneath our main curriculum drivers are our learning behaviours that we focus on each week. We use words such as Word Hard, Concentrate and Push Yourself.
Long-term plans have been created so that subject coverage is planned sequentially and with a clear rationale for making connections with prior learning, therefore learning is blended and refined.
National Curriculum Coverage
At Houldsworth we teach English, Mathematics and Science thoroughly, drawing on the National Curriculum for England for the essential knowledge children require to meet year group expectations. Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community. We expect every pupil will learn regardless of background and the school’s direction stems from its Mission Statement ‘Anything’s Possible’. The ability to learn is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values. We constantly provide enhancement opportunities to engage learning and believe that childhood should be a happy, investigative and enquiring time in our lives where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.
To support teaching and learning across the school, we use a number of targeted improvement programmes.
- In English, we follow the Unity Schools Partnership Curriculum (CUSP).
- For phonics we use Sounds-Write.
- In mathematics, we follow the Mathematics Mastery programme.
Our wider curriculum is planned around themes that are well sequenced, engaging and expect children to connect previous learning to current learning and knowledge. More information can be viewed from the subject buttons below.

Knowledge to be taught
The content of our curriculum is age-related and matched from the National Curriculum.
We teach personal development through high quality, well-organised learning experiences. This is planned into classroom practice as well as being connected to the curriculum.
Spiritual, Moral and Social and Cultural education is connected to the themes of learning, and understanding is developed within the themes of learning for each year group.
